Year 7 Cricket Champions
The year 7 crciket team had already played St Wilfred's Catholic High School before, this season. Carleton won that encounter by one run scored on the last ball of the innings, so another close encounter was expected when the two teams met again in the final of the district cup. The two teams did not disappoint.
Carleton won the toss and elected to field first, leaving St Wilfred's to score what they could over the 16 overs allowed. Some excellent fielding supported the bowlers and St Wilfred's were restricted to 87 runs but mention must be made of St Wilfred's student Ben Walsh who reached 50 not out before he retired. Nial Charles, with 2 wickets for 13 runs, and Ciaran McGuckin, with 0 for 14, were the best of the bowlers.
Carleton made a very positive start to their innings and at half way, after eight overs, were averaging six runs an over and looked well placed for victory. In the next few overs some tight St Wilfred's bowling slowed the scoring rate considerably and at the start of the last over Carleton still needed six runs off six balls. Thankfully Ciaron Stenton was 'up to the task' and on the third ball of the over drove a six over mid wicket to win the game. This brought his personal total to 37 runs and he was ably supported by Dan Everson, who scored 29, and Aaron Taylor who scored 14 not out.
The full team was Flynn Hodgets, Arran Taylor, Jack Oldham, Braidan Altinbass, Ciaran McGuckin, Ciaran Stenton, Nial Charles, Dan Everson, Aidan Millington, Jack Midgley and Cody Collins.
